Greater New Orleans Foundation Awards $188,000 Disaster Response & Restoration Fund Grants to 31 Nonprofits of Southeast Louisiana

New Orleans, LA – Today, the Greater New Orleans Foundation (GNOF) announced round two of its COVID-19 Disaster Response and Restoration Fund grants totaling $188,000.00 to 31 nonprofits. Since the start of this pandemic, GNOF’s Disaster Response and Restoration Fund has awarded $228,000.00 to nonprofits in Orleans, Jefferson, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St. Charles, St. John the Baptist, St. Tammany Tangipahoa, and Washington Parishes.

“Community Foundations are powerful vehicles to do good in people’s lives especially during times of challenge and crisis in a community”, said Andy Kopplin, President and CEO of the Greater New Orleans Foundation. “Our staff and donors have great expertise for times such as these and we will continue to do everything we can to execute at a high level and help get needed funds and resources to people and nonprofits who need them the most.”

Through the Greater New Orleans Foundation Disaster Response and Restoration Fund, we mobilize and support a network of voluntary and community organizations active in disasters (VOADS and COADS) whose expertise is deployed locally, nationally and internationally. We also honor the tradition of “paying it forward” by coordinating with a network of community foundations when disaster strikes other communities to get immediate support to the most vulnerable citizens. Our Response and Restoration Fund provides immediate relief as well as long-term rebuilding support. We plan to support communities throughout our region over the long haul as we recover from the impact COVID-19.

“The Greater New Orleans Foundation continues to be an essential partner in New Orleans’ most challenging times,” said New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell. “These grants to local nonprofits on the front lines helping our most vulnerable citizens will do good immediately. I applaud GNOF and its donors for leaning forward and providing real and timely support. We are not unfamiliar to hard times, but there has been, and always will be, community resilience that is going to get us through this.”

“Jefferson Parish is a strong community because we are there for each other, and our nonprofits are generally leading the way in times of crisis,” said Jefferson Parish President Cynthia Lee Sheng. “We are fortunate to have the Greater New Orleans Foundation and its generous donors investing in nonprofits providing critical support to the most vulnerable in our parish.”

“United Way of Southeast Louisiana supports the stability and well-being of our entire seven-parish service area, which makes us especially concerned about the virus’ progression here at home,” said Michael Williamson, UWSELA president and CEO. “When nearly half of households in our community are already struggling to make ends meet, a public health crisis of this scale has the potential to cripple our region’s fragile workforce and overload our nonprofit community.”

“Baptist Community Ministries is proud to once again partner with the Greater New Orleans Foundation and others to make much-needed financial support to nonprofits working hard for our community,” said Charles Beasley, Baptist Community Ministries President and CEO. “We have a long way to go to help ensure that these critical nonprofits are sustained and equipped to continue the needed work. The collective effort and investment announced today is another sign that we will meet this challenge together.”
